Nathan Hale is executed
Hale was apprehended on September
21, 1776, quickly identified as a spy, and just as quickly
sentenced to hang the next day. By all reports, Nathan Hale
went to the gallows a gentleman.
One phrase that he uttered before his death has been passed down through
history as a
heroic tribute to American patriotism--“I only
regret that
I have but one life to lose for my country”. His initial
statement, however, speaks far more eloquently and
heroically, not only for himself, but for all those who
fought for freedom. “The cause for which I am
dying,” he
said, “I did not take up in an idle moment. I was
born in
it, as are all my countrymen.” It was a message the King
had heard many times, and never understood. Nathan Hale
died on September 22. He was only 21 years old.
It is a sad commentary that the politicians that are running for
our Nations highest office, never understood this either.
Their goals seem to be to fatten their pockets, and those
of their relatives and business associates.
