Is Sarah Palin running Nevada now?

Killing the Lions to Save the Deer--To Kill the Deer
by Stephanie Ernst

Published February 16, 2009 @ 07:56AM PST

Yes, we again enter the bizarre land of hunting and "wildlife management" logic, otherwise known as WTF? 101. Some of you may recall that I posted on the "management" of deer in late November, featuring excerpts from and linking to some excellent commentary and evidence supplied by Doris Lin of About.com. Here's the introduction from that post: "Think that hunting is all about reducing deer populations? What if you learned that state wildlife agencies actually work to keep deer populations high--for the benefit of hunters who want to kill the deer and for the financial incentives involved for the state?"

And from one side of the country to the other these days, the so-called management of deer and other animal populations is a hot topic.

But Nevada--oh, Nevada takes the cake, at least for the moment. I learned via AP and the San Jose Mercury News this morning that "state wildlife officials have announced a plan to kill more mountain lions to help increase the deer population." And when asked to defend this decision, whom did Nevada's director of its Department of Wildlife cite as his expert advisers recommending this action? Hunters. Shocking. "Some hunters think the solution to the deer problem is to kill a lot of lions and the deer will come back." The hunters--that's what this is all about. This isn't about "saving" any deer; it's about preserving the chance to kill them for a species that doesn't need to kill them by killing off another species that does need to hunt them for survival.

It's about humans needlessly killing one set of animals so that humans can have the perverse pleasure of needlessly killing another set of animals.

From the Mercury News:

Nevada's deer population fell from 240,000 in 1988 to 108,000 in 2008, while its current lion population ranges from 1,500 to 2,400, according to the wildlife department.

"Basically, what they're doing is applying the Sarah Palin method of wildlife management, which is to remove animals with big teeth in order to promote the animals hunters like to shoot,"

said D.J. Schubert, a wildlife biologist with the Animal Welfare Institute based in Washington D.C.

"It's an archaic form of wildlife management. Unfortunately, they're making the mountain lion a scapegoat, despite the importance of the mountain lion as a top-line predator in any ecosystem," he said.

And of course, who gets to kill all these mountain lions? Sport hunters! "The state Board of Wildlife Commissioners, meeting in Reno last week, directed agency staff to pursue the policy with the help of sport hunters and contract employees from the U.S. Agriculture Department's Wildlife Services." It's a win-win for the hunters. They want to keep killing deer, and now the state government is telling them that they can kill bunches of mountain lions too, to make their deer hunting even easier.

Tell you what, Nevada. You implement a program to thin the herd of human hunters who are out there killing Nevada's deer every year, and maybe I'll take your concern for deer populations seriously. Until then, I'm reminded of the following pre-election Friends of Animals ad, which I shared with you in early October. Unfortunately, it's not true that you must be in Alaska. It happens all over.

If you shoot wolves to save moose, and then you shoot the moose; you're either out of your mind, or in Alaska!

(And omnivores who may be tempted to join the bashing of Nevada's plan, please keep in mind that this is just another version of the "Kill the coyotes-or-other-natural-predators to save the cows--to kill the cows" practice that goes along with ranching and, yes, "free-range" farming.)

You can help us rescue even more animal survivors

International Fund for Animal Welfare

A Better World for Animals and People

Amidst the devastation, IFAW provides hope and relief

View slideshow of IFAW's bushfire emergency rescue.

http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=doJIIRNwFcJMJ6K&s=evLUJaMPIhLWIcNVIrF&m=lgLVJYODKmK0F

The devastation in the fire zone is hard to imagine: 200 people have perished, more than 1,800 homes have been destroyed, and at least 7,000 people are now without homes.

Many animals have suffered as well - hundreds of thousands may have already died. And without our help many more face death from terrible burns, starvation, dehydration, or wounds suffered when fleeing the fires.

The number of animals being brought to IFAW's rescue center is increasing dramatically day by day as survivors are rescued or emerge from the fire zone to search for food and water.

We need your help today to save and care for these injured animals.

Please give as generously as you can!

http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=fgLMIXNELfIKK5J&s=evLUJaMPIhLWIcNVIrF&m=lgLVJYODKmK0F

IFAW has been able to bring aid to so many already - like the rescued joey found hiding in the scorched pouch of his dead mother - he's now safe and being hand-fed by IFAW volunteers...or the mother and baby koala suffering from burns, dehydration, and smoke inhalation - they were brought into an IFAW-funded rescue center and are now starting the long road to recovery alongside 30 other koalas. We're also providing the resources to treat rescued wallabies, wombats, possums, echidnas, and even a rare greater glider.

So many animals have been helped, yet so many more remain waiting to be saved. Your donation will help us to find, rescue and care for the burnt and injured wildlife victims.

You can help us rescue even more animal survivors.

http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=itISI6PQJiKRIfI&s=evLUJaMPIhLWIcNVIrF&m=lgLVJYODKmK0F

Thanks to the generous support from our donors, IFAW's Emergency Relief team continues to work around the clock in the fire zone:

***Searching for animals burnt or abandoned, and bringing them to safety.
***Providing food, water, and medical care to the pets and farm animals we come across during search and rescue operations.
***Caring for injured animals in the temporary Intensive Care Unit we've established next to a local football field.
***Funding and advising local groups that are also rescuing and caring for animals.

We're doing what we can, but we can't do it alone.

We need your help - not only to save these animals, but to give the people in the fire-ravaged areas a sense of hope. Many local residents are bringing their pets and wild animals to us for treatment - desperate to see these innocent creatures survive.

Seeing animals being helped gives a sense of hope and purpose to people who have lost so much in the fires. Our work is important to both the animals and those who care so much about them... together we want to save and care for as many as we can.

So please help us do more to bring hope to animals and people in this devastated area.

Please give whatever you can spare today.

Arrest warrant for Bush and Cheney

READ FULL TEXT OF WARRANT HERE...

On June 16th during operation "Shock and Awe on the Oregon Coast",, members of SQUADRON13-DEPLOYED recorded this arrest warrant for Bush and Cheney at City Hall in Newport Oregon.

[Text of arrest warrant]

As former members of the armed services of the United States of America, we swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Upon discharge from service we did not renounce that oath, which remains our sacred duty.

It has long been apparent to us that our Constitution is under attack and has been deliberately and relentlessly undermined by domestic enemies -- indeed, by our highest government officials who took and have violated that same oath.

Many Constitutional crimes have been committed by the Bush administration, including warrantless electronic surveillance of American citizens in violation of the 4th Amendment, failure to provide due process rights in violation of the 5th and 6th Amendments, infliction of cruel and unusual punishments in violation of the 8th Amendment, usurpation of powers granted exclusively to Congress in violation of Article I, Section 1, and violation of Article VI, Paragraph 2, which states that all international treaties to which the United States is a signatory are "the Supreme law of the Land."

The wars prosecuted by the Bush administration in our name with our national resources are violations of all treaties defining the international laws of war since 1928, including the United Nations and Nuremberg charters, which uniformly prohibit wars of aggression. As violations of these international covenants and pledges, they also constitute high crimes against the United States Constitution.
Furthermore, the illegal occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan and other war crimes including torture and use of internationally prohibited weapons such as depleted uranium, violate the Geneva Conventions of 1949, thereby further violating the Supreme Law of our Land.

Our oath therefore compels us to issue a citizens' warrant for the immediate arrest of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney, President and Vice-President of the United States.

We call upon President Bush and Vice-President Cheney to surrender themselves to federal law enforcement authorities or to any private group of Americans that is prepared to make these citizens arrests.

The right of citizens arrest is deeply grounded in English common law and is constitutionally protected under the 9th Amendment, derived from the natural right of self-defense and defense of others. A citizens arrest is valid when arresting citizens have a reasonable belief that the suspect has committed a felony.

We believe that felonies of great magnitude have been committed, and the evidentiary bases of these are conclusively established in the public record.

We charge these officials with conspiracy to commit genocide against the citizens of another sovereign state, with conspiracy to commit mass murder of American citizens by waging a fraudulently justified war, and other high crimes described on our website, www.VeteransAgainstTorture.com.

Our charges include war crimes and crimes against humanity for which we will seek extradition for trial in the international criminal court at the Hague, Netherlands, following trial in the United States for treason and other high crimes against our constitutional government.

*AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRE EMERGENCY APPEAL*

International Fund for Animal Welfare

A Better World for Animals and People

********AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRE EMERGENCY APPEAL********

We're in a race against time to help the animal victims of Australia's devastating bushfires.

Hundreds of people and countless animals have already perished in the worst bushfire disaster Australia has ever faced.

Kangaroos have been found dead on the roads...cows burned where they lay...one turtle's shell melted and fused to its body...a baby wallaby's ears and nose were burned to a crisp when he stuck his head outside his mother's pouch.

Please help the animal victims of the Australian wildfires.

http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=deLHLLNtHdLDJYJ&s=fmIWJdNTIiKYIfMZIsE&m=qvI2LgN3ItLcE

IFAW's Emergency Relief Team is already on the ground helping local wildlife caretakers with search and rescue operations, providing medical treatment to burned and abandoned animals that are emerging from the fire zone - koalas, possums, kangaroos, dogs, even horses and birds - as well as food and vet supplies.

But recovery for many animals will be a long process, and we desperately need to raise funds to help over the long term with medical supplies, animal cages, blankets and towels.

Please give what you can to help us rescue and care for the animal survivors.

http://www.kintera.org/TR.asp?a=grJNLUOFJgKKL8I&s=fmIWJdNTIiKYIfMZIsE&m=qvI2LgN3ItLcE

Your donation will do so much to help IFAW continue its crucial Emergency Relief operation to care for these helpless creatures:

***Continuing vital search and rescue operations for wild animals and lost or abandoned pets.
***Providing lifesaving treatment and critical vet supplies to animals saved and brought to local care centers.
***Providing essential food and water - the scorched landscape has left very little natural food for animals.
***Providing emergency funding to local groups that are also rescuing and caring for animals.

Relief workers cannot do it all - they must help stricken and injured people. It's up to us to help the animals.

Any amount you can spare will help the victims of Australia's fires and victims of other natural disasters and incidents of cruelty and suffering around the world.

The victims of Australia's fires simply can't wait. Please make a donation right now.

Thank you, from the burned animals who need you in this tragic time,

Fred O'Regan
IFAW President

p.s. You may be asking yourself: Is there anything one person can do in the face of such an overwhelming tragedy? The answer is a resounding YES, but there's no time to lose. Please donate now to help Australia's bushfire animal victims.

Stop Sarah Palin’s cruel aerial wolf-killing program

Since we launched our Eye on Palin campaign last week, millions have already seen our powerful video featuring actress and activist Ashley Judd. To learn more about this important campaign and what you can do to help, please take a few moments to read the message below from Ms. Judd.

We can’t stop now. Please consider making a donation today to help us air the Palin video on TV during Governor Palin’s next visit to Washington, DC and fight to save the lives of wolves, polar bears and other animals threatened by the extreme anti-wildlife policies of Sarah Palin.

-- Rodger Schlickeisen, Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund

www.eyeonpalin.org

Dear Friend,

Those who know me know that I think it is very important to stand up for the things I believe in. Because I strongly believe in stopping the aerial wolf slaughter in Alaska, I’m honored to be working with you as part of the Eye on Palin campaign.

We’ve already reached millions with the gruesome news of Governor Sarah Palin’s cruel aerial wolf-killing program. But now I need your help to turn up the heat and run Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund’s video on TV as Governor Palin continues her attempts to grab the national spotlight.

Please donate today to help air our video on CNN in Washington, DC during Governor Palin’s next visit to the nation’s capital, and to support Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund’s fight to end aerial wolf-killing in Alaska once and for all -- and also stop Palin’s other wildlife atrocities.

Palin is scheduled to give a major speech in Washington, DC on February 26th. And we want to put the national spotlight on her support for aerial killing of wolves and the execution of helpless wolf pups, her equally outrageous slaughter of female brown and black bears and their cubs, her lawsuit to eliminate federal protections for imperiled polar bears, and her opposition to protecting imperiled beluga whales.

Palin’s clearly worried about our national public education campaign: She’s tried to tar the Eye on Palin campaign as the efforts of an “extreme fringe group.” But

Palin’s aerial wolf-killing program has been repeatedly condemned by scientists, Alaskans and ethical hunters alike.

We’re not about to back down from her and I’m sure you aren’t either. We know that the more Americans hear about her heartless animal-killing programs,

the more the public recognizes that Palin is the extremist -- and her public support plummets.

We’ve already gained the support of some 120 members of Congress to pass federal legislation to end her barbaric killing. And we will stop her.

Please donate today to help Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund air this video on television in Washington, DC during Palin’s visit to the nation’s capital, and to help us take other actions to advance our great cause.

We don’t have much time to seize this opportunity. Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund needs to buy the time this week to put our powerful ad on television in Washington during Palin’s DC appearance at the end of the month.

Because of caring people like you, more Americans are talking about Governor Palin’s awful wolf-killing programs. Our video has been viewed more than 200,000 times on YouTube and been featured on MSNBC, CNN, The Today Show and in hundreds of news articles across the country. And last Friday, Rodger Schlickeisen and I appeared last Friday on Larry King Live to answer Governor Palin’s statement and set the record straight about her wolf-killing program.

With your support

we can reach millions more Americans and make sure they know the truth about Sarah Palin and her anti-wildlife programs.

Thank you for doing what you can to help.

Ashley Judd

P.S. Thank you so much for the incredible support that people like you have shown for the Eye on Palin campaign. Together, we’re making a difference!

Attorney General Eric Holder: Please Appoint a Special Prosecutor

Attorney General Eric Holder: Please Appoint a Special Prosecutor

President Obama's choice for Attorney General, Eric Holder, was confirmed by the Senate yesterday and sworn in today. In another proud historic first, Mr. Holder will be our first African American Attorney General.

During his confirmation hearings, Mr. Holder declared unequivocally, "Waterboarding is torture." This terrified Republicans because it means Holder must prosecute George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzales, and other top officials who authorized waterboarding and the rest of the "Bush System of Torture," as Keith Olbermann calls it.

Republicans pressured Mr. Holder to promise not to prosecute the torturers, but Mr. Holder refused. He said, "No one is above the law." That's exactly what President Obama said when ABC's George Stephanopoulos asked him our question on January 11.

Of course Mr. Holder must also end eight years of absolute corruption under John Ashcroft, Alberto Gonzales, and Michael Mukasey. He must reverse George Bush's criminal policies on torture, habeas corpus, secret government, and warrantless wiretapping. How can Mr. Holder do it all?

The best solution would be for Mr. Holder to quickly appoint a Special Prosecutor to focus exclusively on Bush's crimes. That would take these crimes off Mr. Holder's desk entirely, and ensure a thorough and nonpartisan investigation.

In December, we launched a petition drive with our friends at Docudharma.com. Over 20,000 activists have already urged Mr. Holder to appoint a Special Prosecutor. Please join them:

http://www.democrats.com/special-prosecutor-for-bush-war-crimes

If you already signed, please user our petition form to encourage friends to sign.

You can also call Mr. Holder's office at 202-514-2001 and leave a simple message: "Appoint a Special Prosecutor for George Bush's crimes."

Thanks for all you do!

Bob Fertik
